Vote For Nature

I have just made a birding trip to several of the northern states of Peninsular Malaysia, it was truly an eye opening trip to see the stark and blatant destruction of some of our last remaining wildlands. The State of Perak deserves particular mention, where we saw trailers upon trailers of timber laden trucks ply pass us as we headed towards Royal Belum Park. On each side of the highway leading there we could witness the total rape of nature. In my opinion there were no evidence of any kind of sustainable logging being carried out. My college traveling along makes mention of a Perak state project to plant acacia trees on each side of the highway for the purpose of providing pulp for the paper industry.Acacia is an Australian species and a very invasive species of tree that grows very quickly and causes a lot of damage to the soil PH, it can also spread very quickly and out compete native species of plants. We also know that the biodiversity of a monoculture forest is very poor and can act as a barrier for animals to migrate between habitats. Animals need to migrate in search of food at traditional feeding areas, to migrate so as to breed with other populations therefore enriching their gene pool health. The destruction of the rainforest and the subsequent monoculture that will follow will cut the area in two, and further weaken our natural heritage. A heritage and gift created by the laws of nature for all Malaysians. If there are others out there that feel the desperate shouts of help from nature or laments the lost of our natural heritage then where ever you are, is it not time to put our votes where out mouth is. Let us come together as a single loud voice and scream so as to be heard as one, united in our quest for sanity against the tide of destruction. Only when the people in power realise that we can put our votes where our mouths are, will they take us seriously. "Future generations will not only remember us for what we had created but also for what we have refused to destroy"
